Alexander Springs is located in Lake County’s Ocala National Forest, about 37 miles east of Ocala. A natural pool at Alexander Springs, a sizable spring depression, measures 300 feet (91.4 meters) across and is 25 feet (7.6 meters) deep.

With limestone exposed close to the spring vent, the bottom is primarily made of sand. Near the springs’ vent, there is a sizable vertical ledge as well. The water is crystal-clear and has a blue hue. The local aquatic grasses are abound. On the limestone substrate, there are thin areas of algae. Around the spring lies a mixed hardwood and palm forest. Until Alexander Spring Run’s water reaches the St. Johns River, it travels east for about 8 miles. Alexander Springs is a spring of the first order with camping..

2- Blue Spring (Orange City)

The Timucuan Indians lived in the spring area for hundreds of years. Food, clothing, shelter, and resources for tools and weapons were all available from the spring run, river, and the nearby uplands and wetlands. These people’s main source of sustenance was sandbar snails. The shells that were thrown away throughout the years built up into a sizable pile.

Blue Spring

The majority of the Indians had been eliminated or driven south by the middle of the 1800s, and pioneer settlers had replaced them. The Thursby family constructed a sizable frame home in 1872 atop the Indians’ shell mound, away from the St. Johns’ flooding. The steamboat dock’s pilings are still remnants of a bygone era. A well-known British botanist named John Bartram investigated the St. Johns River three years after England conquered Florida from Spain.

The river’s six-mile length begins at Rainbow Springs State Park, which is located one mile upstream. The spring-fed river is practically crystal clean because there are no tributaries that collect runoff.

One can see to the bottom of the deepest hole when there are no winds or waves.
